Smart Building Show

Drax have just returned from a busy couple of days working alongside our technology partner at the Barbican Smart Buildings Show. It was the first event of this kind and very impressive. Jeremy Allen of Drax Services said, ‘The event was extremely well attended and Drax gained a lot of interest, especially regarding the latest technologies that are coming to market in 2018. We constantly seek to improve the way fire safety is managed and working alongside Drax Technology is a surefire way of achieving this.’

In 2016 the global market for automated and smart building services was worth over 30 billion US dollars. Monitoring activity within premises, especially large sites is one of the best methods of keeping people safe, prevention is undoubtedly better than a cure. Technology in fire safety is predominantly about analysing a site to ensure it is being managed safely, efficiently and the service and maintenance is of the highest standard. Transparency and consistency is vital in this industry which is why Drax created Iris back in 2008. Whilst Iris is constantly being updated for efficiency we also look externally for improved solutions and Smart Technology is a key player. The Drax Technology blog explores this in further detail.

With so many new contracts won, our recent expansion of premises, additional staff and continuation of best practices, attending the Smart Buildings Show was yet another way to cement our place in the future of fire safety. The Smart Buildings Show had an impressive list of exhibitors and speakers. Exhibitors included: Beckhoff, Distech Controls, enlight, Mitie, One Sightsolutions, RedstoneConnect, Sontay, Tridium and WAGO.

John Hatcher, Conference Director, said: "This is the most exciting smart buildings event to take place in the UK and we are pleased to be launching it at The Barbican, London. Bringing together technology vendors and suppliers with FMs, senior leadership teams and building owners under one roof and showcasing the possibilities of smart buildings."

If you attended the event and want to find out more or if you were unable for any reason do get in touch We will gladly carry out a site visit to demonstrate the solutions which are available and make the correct recommendations to improve the efficiency of your fire safety management.

Drax are delighted to support such a worthwhile cause

This is a somewhat different blog post today though still very much in the form of life safety which is the forefront of what Drax do. We wanted to highlight Tommy’s - a charity that work tirelessly to research and prevent the tragedy that occurs when a pregnancy doesn’t go as planned. Over the years we have supported Tommy’s in various guises for a variety of reasons and as we begin the discussions about the 2018 Tommy’s Awards we thought it would be a good time to reflect on the ceremony that took place earlier this year.

Each year Tommy’s recognise some inspirational individuals and dedicated companies at their annual Tommy's Awards. This year’s 2017 Awards was extra special as Tommy’s celebrated 25 years of saving babies lives! It was wonderful to come together with some of the incredible companies and individuals who have helped Tommy’s achieve all that they have across the years.

The awards span three categories, Individual, Community and Company and the awards are made possible through the generosity of sponsors. Should your company wish to be involved or find out more do follow this link Tommy's and should you require any personal support Tommy’s have excellent resources here.

Drax feel very proud to be part of such an amazing cause.

Learning is a treasure which accompanies its owner everywhere

During one of this weeks engineer meetings we had a lot of questions about the new FIA qualifications, which were announced last week. It seemed apt to post a brief note explaining the four new qualifications that are being launched. There is one designed for each of the four job roles within Fire Detection and Alarm Servicing.
Designer          Installer           Manufacturer          Commissioner

They are level 3 or A-Level equivalent on the Qualifications Curriculum Framework (QCF) in the UK which would translate to a Level 4 on the European Qualifications Framework. Back in 2014 the Fire Industry Association gained recognition with all the national regulators for qualifications in England (OFQUAL), Wales (QIW) and Northern Ireland (CCEA) therefore the FIA AO is the new official awarding organisation for qualifications in the fire industry and as such each of these qualifications are recognised.

There are four sections to complete for each qualification before they can be awarded. Moreover, the first three components you need to pass are identical, therefore if you wish to complete each qualification you only need to carry out the fourth component to gain subsequent certification once you have completed the first three.

The new training programme is as robust as ever before but after extensive research now has more content, more advanced knowledge, is longer, formalised and links to other aspects of FD&A systems. Additional needs will be assessed and additional resources made readily available to assist. Candidates needn’t have prior learning or experience to embark on this new programme.

The first classes can be booked from June and you can find out more information by visiting the FIA website here.

Drax always value our staff and work with the FIA to improve and maintain excellence within this industry. We would be happy to discuss the different training and skillset management that we have in place with our current engineers and should anyone wish to express interest in working with us, we are experiencing a period of vast growth so please visit our current vacancies page and get in touch.
